Children's eye tests
Children’s vision plays a crucial role in their overall development, learning, and quality of life. Regular eye tests are essential for detecting any vision problems early and ensuring that children have the visual skills they need to thrive in school and beyond. We offer comprehensive children’s eye tests tailored to the unique needs of young patients, providing expert care and guidance every step of the way.
The importance of children’s eye tests
- Early detection of vision problems: Many vision problems, such as refractive errors (eg nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) and eye conditions (eg amblyopia, strabismus) can develop during childhood. Regular eye tests allow our optometrists to detect these issues early and implement appropriate interventions to prevent potential vision loss and other complications.
- Optimal learning and development: Good vision is essential for children to excel academically and socially. Undiagnosed vision problems can interfere with learning, attention, and overall academic performance. By identifying and addressing vision issues promptly, we help ensure that children have the visual skills they need to succeed in school and other activities.
- Prevention of long-term eye conditions: Some eye conditions, if left untreated, can lead to permanent vision impairment or other complications later in life. Regular eye tests during childhood can help prevent or manage these conditions effectively, preserving the long-term health and clarity of your child’s vision.
Our approach to children’s eye tests
- Child-friendly environment: We understand that visiting the optician can be intimidating for children. Our practice is designed to create a welcoming, child-friendly environment where young patients feel comfortable and at ease during their eye tests.
- Comprehensive assessment: Our optometrists are experienced in performing children’s eye tests using specialised techniques and equipment appropriate for pediatric patients. We assess visual acuity, eye alignment, focusing ability, depth perception, and eye health to ensure a thorough evaluation of your child’s vision.
- Interactive and engaging: We take a patient-centered approach to children’s eye tests, engaging with your child in a friendly and interactive manner to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free. We explain each step of the process in a way that children can understand, encouraging their participation and cooperation throughout the examination.
- Parental involvement: We recognise the importance of parental involvement in children’s eye care. We encourage parents to accompany their child during the eye test and address any concerns or questions they may have about their child’s vision or eye health.

This is a fantastic independent opticians. Nothing is too much trouble for them. You are always warmly welcomed and never rushed. My eyesight is complex and Emma and Charlotte have worked so hard to maximise the sight and find the best glasses. I particularly like the continuity of an independent optician, the staff know you and you don't have to explain everything to a stranger on each visit. My lenses have been complex and expensive but Charlotte tries to keep the cost as low as possible when dispensing. I highly recommend this opticians.
Highly recommend Eyes of Swavesey - they really know what they’re doing. When they found my husband had a serious problem with his eye during a routine checkup, they immediately referred him to Addenbrooke’s for treatment - they take eye health very seriously and have all the technology needed to do the full range of tests, An excellent personal service, and lovely friendly staff who take their time to talk about options and help find the perfect frames from a huge range. Great location just off the A14 - I’d never go anywhere else
Always awesome with the whole families eye tests, but especially for our 6 and 8 year old who have been coming to the team for around 18months for their glasses. Beautiful frames and excellent service!!! Nothing is ever too much trouble. We love our trips to you!!
