06 Mar Ten top tips for healthy eyes
Your eyes are your window on the world, so it’s really important to look after them. But with so many demands on our eyesight – from regular screen time to driving and reading – we can easily take our eyes for granted, so our ten top tips will help you keep them healthy for years to come.
- Check your diet: planning meals that are rich in vegetables and fruit is central to good eye health. Vitamins A, C, and E are all important for your eyes, so focusing on leafy greens, carrots and citrus fruits can be beneficial.
- Exercise regularly: undertaking regular physical activity can help you manage conditions such as diabetes, which can negatively impact your eyesight.
- Grab some shades: don’t skimp on your sunglasses because exposing your eyes to UV rays can be harmful. And even if it’s a cloudy or overcast day, there’s still a risk, so wearing sunglasses in these conditions is advisable.
- Stop smoking and regulate your alcohol intake: aside from having other implications for your health, smoking can increase the risk of you developing an eye condition such as macular degeneration. Excessive drinking, meanwhile, can affect your liver function and this can lead to a reduction in glutathione, an antioxidant that provides much-needed protection for your eyes.
- Give your eyes a rest: whether it’s work, rest or play, we’re all spending hours staring at our screens, and it’s essential to take regular breaks and even to look away for a minute or two.
- Sleep well: Another consequence of our digital culture and our overuse of technology and gadgets can be a lack of good-quality sleep, which is a must to help your eyes with rest and recovery.
- Manage your weight: Obesity can be a trigger for general eyesight issues, so maintaining a healthy weight should be a priority when it comes to looking after your eyes.
- Protect your eyes: whenever you’re doing anything that may result in injury, be sure to wear protective goggles.
- Book regular eye tests: you may genuinely believe that your eyes are fine, but an eye test will take a deeper look and uncover any hidden issues. And when it comes to eye health, the earlier you detect a problem the better the chances of solving it.
- Clean your glasses and lenses: whether you wear glasses or contacts, keep them clean and replace them when you’re advised to do so.
